The Donau brand was founded in Vienna, Austria, in 1954. Its high quality stationery products soon gained popularity, and in 1978 Donau was awarded the Austrian seal of approval for exceptional quality.

In 1989 the company began expanding, first into Eastern European countries, and later into the rest of the world, including South Africa. It also began growing its product ranges, moving solely from office filing products to include school stationery.

In 2018 the company firmly cemented its future strategic direction, as one linked to its history and tradition but focused on constantly growing its product ranges to meet the increasing needs of stationery users, from pre-schoolers to corporate executives.

Donau was the first manufacturer to introduce stationery produced from Polyprop plastic – a fully recyclable plastic. Today it is a world leader on this front, as all its products are made from recyclable material, which earned it the Austrian Ecolabel for products that satisfy the highest quality and environmental protection standards.
